Just saw this comment on a YouTube video about the Libra Tampon Commercial… and found it to be SO WRONG on SO MANY levels that I felt like BITCHING.
Transgender people who have been raised male cannot truly understand what it is to be female. They cannot become female by donning a dress, stilettos and a thick layer of cosmetics, or having surgery. Feminists have fought long and hard against the objectification of women. Transgender people have the right to live as they choose and be proud of who they are. They are not and cannot identify themselves as women. They certainly do not have the right to define what it is to be female.
Well, I for one was raised male. Male-ness was scolded, forced and, on occasion, BEATEN into me by parents and peers. I grew up with the SEX of a male - that is to say, the anatomical and biological building blocks of a MALE. However, my brain is hardwired as FEMALE meaning my GENDER identification is FEMALE {SEX + GENDER = NOT the SAME}. I can very easily define femininity without objectifying women because, in doing so, I would be objectifying myself if my intentions were not pure.
This comment in itself IS transphobic: “They cannot become female by donning a dress, stilettos and a thick layer of cosmetics, or having surgery.” Well, let me tell you: I do not need to LEARN femininity because I, like most if not ALL transpeople, are inherently able to function as their identified gender with little to no issue. It is the idea of “passing” as one’s gender that causes the problem! Not all trans people can adequately pass based on our culture’s stereotypical and narrow-minded view of gender/sex. And that is both SAD (because they will get singled out) and FORTUNATE (because they will be breaking down the gender/sex wall and revealing that the line deviating the two is dangerously THIN.
True, I will never, no matter what paths I take, BE female in the sense of BEING physically. My chromosomes will always be male. I can never menstruate, or bear children, or lactate or go through menopause. I can not experience these basic functions that “define” femininity. BUT I can live identifying AS female and express my gender through my life & actions, and, in doing so, DEFINE femininity for myself.
To say that there are “other things in life” to worry about is SO ignorant since this IS life! Our identities, our gender expressions - that is our life! And how society views us defines how we are treated in life. Do we want to sit back and be vilified, or do we want to stand up and fight this oppression? I chose the latter.
Gender roles in general are such a broad spectrum and so very vague. We NEED to bring an end to them, because it is harmful shit like this that causes problems and helps facilitate offensive smut like that commercial.
